Behind that sweet face on Ana Popovic’s latest release, Still Making History, is one wickedly talented guitar-slinger.

A native of Serbia who has since relocated to the Netherlands, Popovic has been wowing audiences worldwide, many of whom got their first glimpse of her as the opening act for Solomon Burke—not a bad endorsement.

This release encompasses a wide range of styles that at times stray far from blues territory; Popovic spends most of the album addressing themes related to her unusual journey to musical success.

She knows her way around a guitar, from wah-wah-infused soloing to slide-drenched riffs on Hungry and jazzy runs on Doubt Everyone But Me. Popovic further shows off her versatility by venturing into reggae territory on Between Our Worlds.

But the blues is still her strong suit, and Popovic knows how to mine some serious blues tone on solid cuts like You Don’t Move Me and How’d You Learn To Shake It Like That?.

Still Making History is a release from a young artist looking to expand her repertoire beyond blues, but its highlights still lie within what first brought Popovic to the music public’s attention—her blues infused guitar-driven sound.
