ANA POPOVIC "STILL MAKING HISTORY"

Trying to pigeonhole Ms. Popovich into any one category of music is a mistake, but she use the Blues as one of her touchstones. Originally from Belgrade, but living in the Netherlands, she brings a unique accent (literally) to her singing. On this CD, she gives us some hints about the life experiences and world view of someone who has seen their country fall apart in the worst way, most notably in Hold On (2). But as a Blues DJ, my picks are pretty clear. The light and jazzy Doubt Everyone But Me (6), and a rollicking cover of Big Mama Thorton's You Don't Move Me (7). Another good cover is Snooky Pryor's How'd You Learn to Shake It Like That (10) . The Blues Version of U Complete Me (14) shows her range from soft and intimate to hard rocker in the span of a few verses.
